Yes for Gloucester

Letter: Why we support city's 3A zoning

February 1, 2025

To the editor: On April 24 we will vote to accept the Section 3A zoning ordinance our elected officials crafted. We urge you to join us and vote YES to accept it. Here’s why we’re voting YES:

1) Our elected officials did a great job with this ordinance. They sought out community feedback and responded to it carefully over months of public deliberations. The result complies with the state’s requirements while laying out a path that’s great for Gloucester. They did what we elected them to do.

2) This is a zoning ordinance, not a mandate to build. We are NOT going to see radical changes to Gloucester.

3) It keeps us in compliance with the state. Do you really want to lose state grants we rely on and run up expensive legal fees?

We know many fear increased housing development in our city, that it will change the “character” of our city. That’s already happened while we sat back and watched. Most recent residential development has been targeted at new retirees and wealthier buyers, out of reach of young families and people who want to be homeowners in the city where they work.

While deciding how to vote, we urge you to consider the long-term advantages that responsible housing development can bring to Gloucester. Increased stability for families, reduced commute times, and a revitalized community spirit. Together, we can work towards a balanced approach that prioritizes both development and the well-being of our citizens.

Thank you. Please vote YES!
