Letter to the Editor: New Year’s resolution: Approve 3A zoning

Jan 5, 2025

To the editor:

It’s the time of year for New Year’s resolutions. And I’ve got a good one to share. Help secure Gloucester’s 3A/MBTA plan!

We need to comply with the law and the city has constructed a modest, restrained, cautious, restricted zoning plan that does just that. No building required; but some opportunities for home owners who might want to add a unit or two.

The designated zone is:

In walking distance to the MBTA train station and other amenities.

But not in the immediate downtown or historic district.

Limits the number of units to just three on most of the possible lots.

Lots have to be at least 4,000 square feet, a factor that eliminates many lots.

Has to meet other parking, public health, and infrastructure regulations.

Six units are possible in another small segment in the Arthur Street area; and one larger site at Gloucester Crossing would potentially allow a larger housing complex that would require some units be designated affordable!

Let’s get on with it — get this plan affirmed throughout the city so we regain access to all those crucial state grants as well as secure full funding for the Housing Authority so it can sustain its vital work. Let’s get back in compliance! Join us in Housing 4 All Gloucester as we join with others in activating such an important New Year’s resolution!
